Are you thinking linearly or exponentially?

We live in an exponential world. So, what does that mean?

Last week at the Microsoft Ignite 2019, we heard from Satya Nadella talk about "Tech intensity," defined in his keynote as Tech Intensity = (Tech adoption) ^ Tech capability. With this exponential change, how do we manage the adoption?

Exponential thinking: Think Exponential exists to change how you see technology, to think of it as a series of predictable steps or generations. Humans think in terms they can relate to. We base our expectations on our experience; we live in linear time and space.

Exponential leadership: Exponential leaders dare to disrupt the company status quo; they believe that an open-door policy extends beyond lending the odd ear as a gesture. Creating a culture of openness expresses authenticity and transparency in the workplace, building trust where employees and leaders work together to innovate and succeed.

Exponential growth rate: Increase in number or size, at a steadily growing rate. It is one possible result of a reinforcing feedback loop that makes a population or system grow by increasingly higher amounts. Compound interest is an example of exponential growth.

If you are not thinking and living exponential, you’re going backward.

You must become unstoppable.

You must become iterative and adaptive.

It’s not about having five-year planning anymore.

It’s about moving forward, reworking, adjusting, and tweaking.

So how you do it, most folks are gripped with the Fear of unknown.

As Tony Robbins says, “With fear, you have some excitement” focus on the excitement.

To achieve exponential growth, follow these five steps:

1. Let your work speak for itself

Cal Newport's recent book, Deep Work, distinguishes “deep work" from "shallow work."

Talking is shallow. Anyone can do it. It's easily replicated. It's a low value. Conversely, deep work is rare. It's done by people who are focused and working while everyone else is talking. Deep work is so good it can't be ignored. It doesn't need words. It speaks for itself.

2. Always work on your mental strength

“Mental resilience is arguably the most critical trait of a world-class performer, and it should be nurtured continuously.” – Josh Waitzkin

The best training you will ever do is mental training. Wherever your mind goes, your body follows. Wherever your thoughts go, your life follows.

3. Confidence is your greatest asset

‘Running a marathon is far more mental than physical’ Your confidence determines:

  • The size of challenges and goals you undertake

  • How likely you will achieve those goals and

  • How well you bounce back from failures

4. Let things go, but never forget

Being unstoppable requires carrying no unnecessary mental or emotional baggage. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you forget. And it doesn’t mean you have to do further business with those who have wronged you.

5. Think and act 10X

“When 10X is your measuring stick, you immediately see how you can bypass what everyone else is going” – Dan Sullivan

So, are you thinking linearly or exponentially?
